Redmer Hoekstra Biography
Redmer Hoekstra (1982) graduated from the Art Academy in Zwolle as a visual artist and illustrator in 2009. He has always loved alienation, fantasizing, and daydreaming. As a child, he had all kinds of theories about how the world worked. At the Academy, he was able to rediscover this and process it into his work. Redmer is fascinated by how things work. It is apparent in his artwork. He takes different subjects and creates a whole new meaning for them. Redmer enjoys playing with form, meaning and function, while new combinations arise.
Redmer finds inspiration riding the train or on the road, where his mind can float through the landscape and new connections between things appear. He contemplates philosophical views of the world and himself. He captures those thoughts as pen drawings on paper. Redmer works with fine liners, using the process of shading to create light and space, which brings artwork to life. Redmer believes it is important to draw as realistically as possible, to make the alienation most powerful. He says it’s a laborious and almost artisanal technique. A drawing can take on average takes 32 to 40 hours.
