Allen Douglas Biography
Allen Douglas received a BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University, graduating magna cum laude in 1994. For the past twenty-five years, he has been creating paintings for a variety of commercial clients in the editorial, advertising, and gaming industries, though the bulk of his work is for the book publishing market. Notable clients include Disney-Hyperion, Scholastic, Little Brown Books for Young Readers, Tor Books, Berkley Books, Penguin Putnam, HarperCollins, Harcourt, Random House, Macmillan/McGraw Hill, Holt Rinehart & Winston, Wizards of the Coast, Hasbro, and Upper Deck.
His traditional paintings have also been exhibited in galleries and museums both in the United States and Internationally, including Haven Gallery (NY), Abend Gallery (CO), Gallery Nucleus (CA), the Mazza Museum of International Art from Picture Books (OH), the Society of Illustrators in New York and Los Angeles, and the Strong National Museum of Play (NY). His artwork has been recognized by many prominent juried illustration competitions including Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art, the Society of Illustrators of New York, and Los Angeles, Art Renewal Center, Infected By Art, Ballistic Publishing, and Step-By-Step Graphics.
In recent years he has been creating a body of independent work that he calls CRYPID VISIONS. CRYPTID is a term often used for creatures whose existence has been suggested but has not been scientifically documented. It is a term that seems fitting to describe this traditionally executed independent work, which depicts animals in both a familiar and unexpected way. He often turns to folklore for the concepts of his work and distorts size relationships, environments, or the animals themselves to create visions that are truly unique, while at the same time paying homage to animals’ natural physical attributes and behaviors. He combines his affinity for nature with what he has been painting professionally since 1994… fantasy illustration for the publishing and gaming industries.
Allen has also been teaching as an instructor at the Rochester Institute of Technology since 2003. Some of the classes taught include Book Illustration, Fantastic Illustration, Sketchbook Illustration, Foundation: Illustration/Medical Illustration, Composition and Color, and Illustration I. His studio is located in Rochester, NY on the southern shores of Lake Ontario.
